A Story of Resilience and Grit: Jaxson Shares his Preparation for Phalloplasty
Gender-affirming surgery has a powerful effect on those needing it, especially in terms of mental health. When a person feels like their body truly represents them as a person, depression and anxiety rates are drastically reduced and even can reduce the need for medications such as antidepressants. It is a key necessity in a healthcare approach to transgender patients.
After years of treatment, including three long, difficult surgeries (and the even more gruelling recovery), Jaxson’s medical transition has officially finished! So we’re taking a trip down memory lane in this week’s episode, as we each share our own memories of the process and what it meant to both of us. We’ll be answering some of the biggest questions around his transition process, including the medical procedures (including what a phalloplasty actually is). As a potentially life-changing opportunity, it’s not always readily accessible - we’ll discuss some of the barriers to access, such as the non-inclusion in health insurance or Medicare. But it’s not necessarily just being financially able to go through with such intense treatment that’s the most important preparation required! The body goes through a significant amount of stress physically, biochemically, and emotionally, and this requires an athlete-like level of preparation to maximise healing and minimise the mental impact where possible. We’ll break down the incredible way Jaxson used holistic health to prepare his whole self for the surgery, and the overwhelmingly beneficial effect it has on his health outcomes.
